Bird's
Paradise in Gotham
by Nicki Fraioli
Carol
Bird was the perfect bidder for the “Night in Gotham”
item in the Silent Auction at the annual West Coast Active
Riders Indio Party. As a dancer herself, this equestrian could
relate to the plot of Alfre Woodard’s new film, “Take
the Lead”. “It was so totally me!” she beamed.
The
movie is based on the true story of Pierre Dulaine (Antonio
Banderas), his fortuitous encounter with Principal Augustine
James (Alfre Woodard) and her challenge to work with the schools
worst students in detention hall after school. As a professional
ballroom dancer, Pierre decides to challenge the rough ghetto
dwelling students with a citywide dance contest, which is
where the story begins.
Carol’s
interest was sparked by this story line. “Dance is wonderful
for children. It teaches them to be ladies and gentlemen in
social situations and gives them poise and confidence.”
With her bags packed up and ticket in hand, Carol set off
to view this inspiring story on the big silver screen.
The
adventure began on a crisp New York evening, when Carol and
her lucky guest got to ride in style with Alfre and her family
to the movie premiere at the Lincoln Center. When they pulled
up to the fire works of flashing photographers, Carol, in
a hot pink salsa dress, could have tangoed down the red carpet
but instead opted to let Alfre shine. When the two reconnected
later in the evening, a gracious and concerned Alfre asked,
“Where were you?” Carol replied, “Alfre,
it was about you!” Carol did fine mingling on her own,
brushing shoulders with Antonio Banderas, “Sex in the
City’s” Christopher Noth, and young actor Rob
Brown.
Following
the film, patrons were escorted to the after party at the
Palladium where spirits flowed freely and fine food brandished
the tables. The night kicked off with live music and entertainment
followed by a special guest appearance by Pierre Dulaine himself
and his team of incredible dance students (ages 5-17). The
inspiration to groove was in the air and by the end of the
evening, every guest was shaking a tail feather on the dance
floor. A seasoned ballroom dancer, Carol was delighted to
spend the evening spinning and twirling under the chandeliers.
She optimistically added with a glow, “When I’m
too old to jump horses, I’ll still be able to dance!”
After
an unforgettable evening and once in a lifetime opportunity,
I asked Carol to mention the highlight of her experience.
She thought for a moment, and then answered with confidence,
“Getting to know Alfre. She was the most gracious hostess.
Absolutely fabulous at sharing her time and thoughts. She
couldn’t have made it more wonderful. It was really
like two friends going out together.”
West Coast Active Riders would like to thank both Alfre and
Carol for their time, contributions and active involvement
in our organization. Thanks to Alfre, Bird was literally in
paradise – Gotham style!
