EAST COAST VICTORY FOR WEST COAST RIDERS
It was a fabulous West Coast day on the East Coast when Will Simpson rode Carlsson Vom Dach to victory in the $100,000 Zada Enterprises Masters Cup at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center in Wellington, FL. Both a World Cup qualifying event and a 2008 Olympic Games trial, the class was a highlight during the seventh week of the Wellington Equestrian Festival. Christa Heibach of Germany built a difficult course resulting in only three clean and three with time faults out of a field of 67 horse and rider combinations.
Not just one but two Simpsons went clean in the first round, Will was first to ride fault free, followed by Nicole Simpson, now a resident of Wellington, FL, on SRF Dragonfly, with Jeffrey Welles and Armani as the third and final pair to ride clean. Having the opening ride in the jump off, Simpson rode clean to set the pace. Nicole and SRF Dragonfly retired on course after dropping the height of the first fence in the jump off. Welles and Armani had the advantage, jumped clear in 41.35 but ultimately couldn’t catch the 40.63 time laid down by West Coast Active Riders President Will Simpson.
Foregoing the circuit on this coast to try out for the Olympic Team, we all wish Will the best in pursuing the Olympic dream. Even with his commitment to this goal, Will offered to contribute a special clinic to the auction list at the WCAR Celebrating the Champions Fundraiser this coming weekend. Another West Coast rider who held his own in this challenging field was Ali Nilforushan riding Warco Van De Halhoeve placing twelfth with just four faults at the second to last jump within the tight time allowed.
